For the second year running, Neil Barraclough of the Rare & Heritage Fruit Tree Association (Vic) has traveled country NSW skilling up interested locals on how to graft and maintain heritage varieties of fruit trees, some on the endangered list. Not only did he share his knowledge and skills in the grafting process itself, but he brought along a huge selection of scion (grafting wood) to our community garden for participants to graft and grow on to maturity.
At the Garden, we hope to keep a register of which varieties are now growing in our shire for sharing wood at future events.
Neil also demonstrated how to set up a rootstock bed so that in the future, the community garden can be a limited source of local rootstocks for locals to graft wood from their desired trees onto.
A big thanks to Neil for his generosity. And thanks also to all participants. It was a pleasant and interesting day.
Think Global – Grow Local was our theme for World Environment Week this year.
And the weather gods must have been paying attention, as the rain stopped and patches of blue sky encouraged locals to come down and tour the sustainable features of our community garden – 3.7kW solar power with battery storage, a substantial bio-swale to capture and hold our storm water for use in growing productive food crops, our strawbale shelter (the hearth of our Garden), our resource recycling compost bays and substantial worm farms, not-to mention our community built pizza oven which was the centre of attention around lunch time.
What a lovely atmosphere it was, enhanced by the participation of families with their children
One family won the worm farm donated by the Moss Vale Resource Recovery centre and raffled off after the worm demo. We were treated to a scrumptious morning tea provided by the local CWA ladies followed by wood-fired pizzas for lunch.
In the end, an altogether enjoyable way to start the June long weekend.
We have been entering our produce in the local Moss Vale Agricultural Show for the past eight years. Despite the challenging summer and autumn weather this year, starting with months of very hot and dry conditions followed by weeks of constant rain, we were thrilled to win 10 blue ribbons and 4 red (second prize) ribbons. But to top it all off, we also received the “Most Successful Fruit Exhibitor” sash for 2017.
So we just had to have a little brag……..
This Seniors Event was hosted by the Four Seasons Community Garden in Bowral in early March.
It featured plant stalls by our two local community gardens along with food tasting provided by Meals on Wheels and a most enjoyable short concert by our local Ukele band, featuring our own Rosina Buckman. Even the ongoing wet weather didn’t stop the people coming along to enjoy the event.
Moss Vale Community Garden would like to invite you to our open day on Saturday 10th June from 10am to celebrate World Environment Week.
Come along and check out the environmentally sound elements in the Garden including: solar power; systems for catching, storing and using rainwater; strawbale building and sustainable gardening practices like organic soil improvement and non-toxic pest control.
If you like getting your hands dirty:
- we will be setting up a brand new ($60) worm farm we will be raffling for some lucky person to take home.
- you can take part in helping build a “hot bed” into which we will plant some vege seeds which will rocket out of the warm soil despite the chilly winter weather.
And then there will be wood-fired pizzas for lunch…….

Jill and the Garden Gang
In November, well-known local chef, Geoff Jansz dropped in to see us at the community garden and brought a lovely spread of fresh food to share for lunch. Geoff has long been a vege grower, garden-to-plate chef and is in the process of developing his Bowral acreage as a community garden. He has a range of initiatives in the pipeline and being devotees of local food production, we hope to see some of these projects on the ground soon.
Geoff has promised to come back in 2017 and do a demonstration of his 3-Greens Dish, a particularly wholesome and delicious meal that is quick and easy. What more could you want from a meal?
