In November 2016, with the support of our local Wingecarribee Shire Council Smartygrants, we organised our second cheese workshop for the year.
Our specialist cheesemaker, Nathan Burke, guided us through the process of making Halloumi, quarg and sour cream. After a shared lunch, we headed next door to the Community Garden to choose some tomato seedlings to take home and grow on. Mmmmmm…… Grilled Halloumi & tomato on toast.
As with most Christmas parties, our members enjoyed a table bulging with cold meats and fresh Garden salads, followed by a variety of desserts including cherries picked that very morning, berry pavlova (berries from the Garden so only “food metres” rather than “food miles”) washed down with locally brewed elderflower champagne, pink (rhubarb) champagne and fruit punch bearing golden & red raspberries, and cherries.
Don’t you just love the abundance of an organic garden, especially when your combined labours throughout the year, in all weathers, culminate in such a healthy and delicious celebration?
No point growing lots of fresh fruit if the birds and bats make off with the majority of it.
In December, Community Garden members formed a posse to stretch bird netting along the 30 metre length of fence bearing our espaliered apples, cherries, pears, plums, plums and walnuts. We are expecting that this will prove the easy part of the process, as experience has shown that in the ensuing months before we can safely remove them, the trees will send new branches through the fabric.
Oh well, we await the development of a better system.
